‘Avogeddon’: 2,000 Pounds of Avocados Will Be Given Away in Philly This Week

The City of Brotherly Love is scheduled to receive a massive distribution of avocados this week thanks to local nonprofit, Sharing Excess. In an event called “Avogeddon,” three trucks full of avocados will be handed out to the public for free.

According to Whyy.org, the purpose of the event is to prevent food waste due to recent supply chain issues that have caused an over-shipment of avocados from South America.

Apparently food banks and distribution partners can’t handle the massive influx. Founder Evan Ehlers explains, “We realized that we needed to do something bigger to be able to handle this massive surplus in a timely manner where the avocados are still good and able to be eaten,” Ehlers said. “We reached out to the Friends of FDR Park and they were kind enough to be down with this crazy idea of allowing us to take over a portion of their parking lot to host the massive drive thru distribution of these avocados, which are free for anyone and everyone to come up and get.”

For folks looking to stock up on the healthy protein-rich fruit, 2,000 pounds of avocados filling 60 pallets will be available at FDR Park this Wednesday through Friday on a first come, first serve basis.

The best part is that there’s no limit on how many you can grab.
