Tattoo popularity has exploded in the last few years. In fact, according to data collected by YPulse, the percentage of young adults with tattoos climbed from 21% in 2019 to 40% in 2022. As someone that’s tattoo-less in an increasingly ink-skinned world, I alternate between envy and feeling special. Temporary tattoo Google searches aside, it appears the train is leaving the skin station and has food as its next destination.

According to Bangkok Foodie, a spot in Thailand called Nakornmu Burger has just introduced the world’s first tattoo burger. What exactly is a “tattoo burger” you might ask? Well, it doesn’t involve ink nor skin, but rather, carries a deeper connection to Thailand’s culture. Considered “high street food,” Nakornmu Burger emblazons its buns with ancient Thai talisman symbols that carry positive affirmations. One mystic symbol relates to wealth, another is about compassion and love, and the final brand symbolizes strength.

In the video, workers showcase two of their mouthwatering signature burgers. Each is topped with a special combination of Thai-centric ingredients that make eating them a truly regional experience. One grilled burger comes with curry-like sauce, cumin and mango leaves, then is finished with basil leaves and red chili — toppings you normally don't see on a burger. Their Northern Thailand-style Khao Soi Chicken Burger comes on a red bun and is topped with crispy noodles, red onions, sauce, and more. If those two flavorbombs don’t get you salivating, Nakornmu has several other options to choose from.

After burgers are carefully constructed for max enjoyment, a special symbol is branded on the bun for the final experiential touch. Each of the symbols were created by one of the country’s national tattoo masters. Unfortunately, those of us who don’t live in Thailand can only dream and drool from a distance.
